Stylized Japanese Room

I completed this project in May 2026, following an online course created by Aniket Rawat.

I wanted to develop the skills to create detailed, well-composed 3D rooms in Blender. I chose this project in particular because it provided the perfect aesthetic to also serve as a background reference for my manga.

The type of room I want to make

Blocking

I made the basic shape of the room, added in the walls, doors and wooden planks.

Detailed Modeling

I started defining the traditional Japanese elements, modeling the tatami floor mats, building the grid frames for the sliding Shoji doors etc.

Setting the Scene

I positioned my camera to frame the room and set up the warm, atmospheric lighting, using a vibrant sunset backdrop to establish the mood of the scene.

Shading & Material Nodes

I jumped into the Shader Editor to build custom node setups, adjusting the color values and mapping textures to achieve a clean, stylized look for the wood and tatami mats.

Final Props & Layout

This was my render before composition. I added more decorative objects to the room like the center table, vase, and wall art to complete the space.

Post-Processing & Rendering

I finished the project by running the render through the compositor, adjusting the tones and highlights to achieve the final anime background style.

Learning Outcome

This project was a complete dive into stylized 3D production, allowing me to build a strong foundation in anime environment design. Through this hands-on experience—covering composition, structural modeling, lighting setups, material shading, and final post-processing compositing—I have gained complete control over the entire creative pipeline. I am now entirely confident in my ability to independently create detailed, fully furnished stylized 3D rooms tailored to my needs.I finished the project by running the render through the compositor, adjusting the tones and highlights to achieve the final anime background style.
